MINIMUM WAGE FOR CHILDREN

Date: 17 February 2010

ACYA has written to the Hunan rights Commission asking them to review Section 30 of Human Rights Act.

ACYA has written to the Human Rights Commission.
There are two issues of significance affecting child labour in New Zealand. The first is that not all 16 and 17 year olds are entitled to the minimum wage. The other is that there is no minimum wage for children under 16 years of age. In each case children are being discriminated against on the grounds of their age.ACYA has formally requested the Human Rights Commission to review Section 30 and s21(1)(i)(iii) of the HRA and indicate
a) Whether the Commission agrees that these sections discriminate against under 18s on the grounds of their age.
b) if so, what steps in the Commission taking to remedy the situation and, in particular is the issue to be raised as part of the mid-term review of the Action Plan on Human Rights.
The HRC response will be crucial to feed into the CRC report and also an important step to secure equal wages for child workers
