ACYA Projects

ACYA receives funding from the JR McKenzie Trust. That funding and ACYA’s constitution focuses ACYA’s work on promoting respect for the rights of children and youth. We do this through:

• Preparing and presenting the national coalition civil society shadow reports to the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child
• Promotion of understanding and implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child
• Advocacy around the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child recommendations to NZ on actions required
• Advocacy for increased opportunities for children and young people to be heard in all matters that affect them, including policy decisions, education and health settings, youth justice facilities.

ACYA has prepared and presented three reports to the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child.

We write submissions to Parliamentary committees, about proposed legislation that affects children and young people. For more information, see Submissions to NZ Parliament.
The main mechanisms by which we advocate for respect for children and young people and their rights are:

• Working papers that identify children’s rights issues in various policy areas. For more information view Working papers.
• Workshops and seminars in which issues can be discussed in depth. These are attended by experts and people with experience in working with and providing services for children and young people. For more detail go to the Workshops and Seminars pages.
  
• Promoting incorporation of the views and experiences of children and young people when policy decisions are made by government departments, particularly the Ministry of Social Development. Go to the Children’s Voices page for more detail on our work in this area.
