History of ACYA
Action for Children Aotearoa (ACA) was formed in 1995 by public health physician Dr Alison Blaiklock, and others, to produce New Zealand's first non-government report to the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child. ACA presented the report in Geneva to the UN Committee in 1997. ACA was reconstituted as ACYA in 2002.
Under Dr Blaiklock’s leadership, ACYA produced, published and presented the second non-governmental report to the UN Committee, entitled Children and Youth Aotearoa 2003 and a video report of children’s views, entitled Whakarongo Mai/Listen Up. Both reports were presented to the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child in June 2003. |
In 2010, ACYA produced, published and presented the combined third and fourth periodic report Children and Youth Aotearoa 2010. ACYA's Chairperson and Deputy Chairperson at the time, John Hancock and John Waldon, presented the report to the UN Committee. John Waldon authored and presented a separate report focusing on Maori children entitled Tamariki Māori: A Māori View of children’s rights.
